Elder abuse is increasingly being recognized as a major societal problem across Europe. There is a risk that this problem will grow as Member States experience rapid population ageing. Especially older people with mental and physical disabilities and dependent on the help of informal or professional carers are vulnerable to abuse. Previous research (AVOW Project, 2011), indicates that prevalence rates of elder abuse in different European countries varies from 0.8% to 39.4%. Under-reporting of elder abuse and the insufficient recognition of the issue at a societal level shows the need for a change of attitudes towards ageing and older people. As well as the continued and increased awareness of elder abuse, training for professionals and other people working for older people, such as voluntary workers and informal carers. Also older people and their families play a crucial role in raising awareness of elder abuse. Members of this partnership have developed this proposal based on the outcomes of a recent European level project “Wellbeing and Dignity of Older people, WeDO” (2010-2012). The objectives of this project are to expand knowledge and awareness on ways to prevent elder abuse at a local, national and European level, share and develop innovative training material and methods and ways to raise awareness of elder abuse prevention among volunteers, informal carers and older people and their families and engage in national elder abuse awareness raising through involvement in World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) events. The project includes transnational partner meetings, workshops and WEAAD events in each partner country. The outcome of the project will be a training and awareness raising package for volunteers, informal carers, older people and their families.
