    Music in Stress out

Our project was a Comenius Multilateral partnership under Lifelong Learning Programme of the EU. The language of the project was English. The project was proposed by partners from Turkey, Spain, Germany, Poland and Bulgaria from the e-twinning network. A google group with a common e-mail address (musicinstressout@googlegroups.com) was created and since then the partners contacted each other by e-mails. The project was planned to last for 2 years. The target audience of this project was young people between the ages of 14-18 who have problems in coping with stress and have a tendency to violence in the adolescence period. The title “Music in Stress out” illustrated the intentions of this project very clearly. Throughout the project, the partner countries applied stress surveys to participating students to measure their stress levels at the beginning and at the end of the project. Survey results were compared and reported. Adolescent students' stress levels were found to be high at the beginning. In this context, seminars were given by an expert to students to help them cope with stress. Also, a music room was created where a music teacher trained students about note and rhythm in order to help them get rid of their stress using percussion instruments. Bulgarian students took part in the project with dances. Students had music and art workshops where they danced, studied dances and customs. Although the stress level of the students was not cleared off totally, they were made aware of that music, especially percussion instruments, is an alternative way to cope with stress. With the music groups in the project, teenagers, being provided with the opportunity to work together, tried to lessen the stress level and the suppressed tendency for violence, increased their self-confidence and improved their communication. Doing music studies in groups contributed and developed the feeling of sharing and working together.

  • Music and Percussion Workshops

Music, especially percussion instruments, is a good means to help students get rid of their stress. Co-educational music workshops were established (e.g. folklore music workshop in Bulgaria; stick-fighting and percussion battles in Germany; cajon and flamenco workshop in Spain; Chopin workshop in Poland; national dances in Turkey).
