    Landmarks and Monuments

    Landmarks and monuments often have religious, cultural, historic or geographic significances and they provide a unique insight into the cultural identity of any country. Through the centuries many of these monuments and landmarks have been sources of inspiration to writers, poets, artists and musicians. Many of them also have become iconic and symbolic and every pupil can name a landmark or monument. Our project wishes to utilise these landmarks and monuments to engage the pupils of the partnership in a cross-curricular project. The first landmarks for children are the home and the school. Thus, we want to engage pupils firstly with their immediate environment and then proceed to national/international and parliamentary monuments, using four modules of work: Home/School, Locality, National/International and Parliamentary. There are seven schools in our partnership - each with experience of Comenius Projects, each bringing different expertise and skill sets, but bringing a shared sense of commitment to the project. Many of our schools have pupils who are at risk of leaving school early. We feel that this project will engage the pupils in the process of work, that it can be adapted to suit pupils no matter what their ability, and that it will be of interest to all pupils regardless of ethnicity. We believe that pupils will become more aware and more appreciative of cultural diversity, and more knowledgeable about the workings of democracy. We expect that they will improve their research, ICT language, communication, artistic and presentation skills while at the same time enhancing their self-confidence and self-esteem. Teachers will develop professionally and culturally, and the status of the schools involved will be enhanced at local, regional and national levels.
