Senior Volunteers Towards Culturally Sensitive Care Across Boarders ”CARNATION” stemmed out of a valuable idea borrowed from the European Shared Treasure Catalogue, project 2008-1-DE2-LE004-00097 which deals with competences for culturally sensitive care. The authors quite rightly point out that nursing care of elderly and disabled people in nursing homes or day care facilities all over Europe, focuses on medical aspects whereas cultural aspects of the care are often missed out. Senior volunteers turn out to be invaluable group of people who may fill in the gap, if encouraged and properly organized. ”CARNATION” was therefore targeted at 12 seniors who volunteer 3 weeks’ work for partner town elderly and disabled, mentally disadvantaged adults and children, popularizing who are very often very musically and artistically sensitive. Volunteers were recruited, among senior citizens of their towns - Third Age Universities and senior clubs. The first year partner organizations - PROSAS Sines, Portugal oraz ProEdu Rybnik, Poland were preparing volunteers for their mobilities and work. Organisations prepared language-learning templates in three languages: Portuguese-English-Polish. SV were taught survival Polish/ Portuguese and elementary English to be able to get by, to communicate with the recipients of their service and to participate in the life of the partner organisation during their mobility. They were also planning and preparing the art/music/ crafts workshop they delivered in the partner town. A group of 6 seniors from Sines worked in Rybnik in September 2012. Three pairs of Polish volunteers worked in Sines in July 2012, October 2012 and July 2013. PROSAS and ProEdu cooperated closely at each stage of the mobility, providing logistic services, mentoring, organizing the volunteers’ free time and local visits with the support of volunteers from their organizations. The project also aimed at encouraging and inspiring senior citizens to volunteer in the future.
