Volunteering as an opportunity for learning in later life

The project “Volunteering as an Opportunity of Learning in Later Life” is a collaboration of three European associates from Italy, Denmark and France: Seniores Italia, Seniors Without Borders (SWB) and Office Technique d’études et de Cooperation Internationale (OTECI). They are all non-profit organizations, supporting advisory services provided by Volunteer Senior Experts in several areas of intervention, both at the European level and in developing countries. The three organisations have joined forces investigating on senior professional volunteers’ motivation at the European level and identified innovative strategies and tools to enhance senior professionals involvement in volunteering. The partnership aims were also to identify best practices in pre-departure training provided to senior volunteers leaving for a national or an international assignment in the field, and to create a tool for pre-departure training tailored for senior skill-based volunteers. Main outcomes are: 1) an informative booklet summarizing motivations that lead European senior professionals to serve as volunteers, 2) a paper on strategies and tools to attract new senior volunteers, 3) a pamphlet concerning best practices in pre-departure training, 4) an e-learning based training course made available on Internet to individuals and to organisations working with senior volunteering at the European level. As a result, chances of being still active after retirement for European senior professionals are increased, the Associations' capacity to attract new senior volunteers and to train them for volunteering in the field is strengthened. In addition, the partner associations and team members have learned new ways of international co-operation and multicultural team-work - relations and experience which will lead to new joint activities between the three and beyond. Five well-organized international meetings, have played a major role in this process.
