Botanic Gardens. New tools for environmental education

The goals of the partnership is to create a network among Botanic Garden of Florence, Madrid and Meise (Bruxelles), to exchange experiences and knowledge, to create an educational material easy to use even in other European countries. The three gardens are very different from each other, for history, structure and organization: they found some elements to develop a common educational path through some plants "flag" that represent each Botanical garden in the other; plants important from the point of view of scientific research, history, ethnobotany, biodiversity and plants related to the specific figures of botanists, explorers, painters. We highlighted the structures, “hidden treasures”, that traditionally are not part in educational pathway, as archives, germoplasm banks, libraries, herbaria, etc; those structures are very important either for the scientific research than for the public. The main part of the project was the exchange, in 7 meetings, of educational experiences about workshops and teaching methods. One result is a handbook dedicated to the guides, teachers, facilitators, nature-guides, citizen, tourists, passionate amateurs of botany, students and animators: it is possible to find any information about plants, botanists, scientific institutions, workshop, guide best pratcices. Another result is a website with the description of the project, the partners, the tours in each garden; there is also a space dedicated to the guides “Guides corner” to exchange experiences and knowledge and the thematic movies. Each garden achieved a self-guided tour with panels which explain in the original language and the partenship language the “flag” plants, the history of the explorations, the scientific research, biodiversity and ethnobotany. The results of the project were disseminated by several events in each garden: meetings with guides and volunteers, guided visit for schools, downloading of the handbook by internet, presentation in a congress of botany.
