Lifelong Learning through Volunteering: Seniors Sharing Skills and Experience in an Interactive Exchange

Lifelong Learning through Volunteering: Seniors Sharing Skills and Experience in an Interactive Exchange This project will address the educational challenge of an ageing population by linking the London division of a UK older volunteering organisation with a local Italian volunteering network, with reciprocal exchanges of 3 weeks by 6 volunteers from each organisation. The volunteers and organisations will share good practice and experiences of engaging older people. The project will: • Share the experience of partners in creating opportunities for lifelong learning by older people • Illustrate how engaging older people in volunteering fosters active ageing, active citizenship, community leadership and social cohesion • Understand how volunteering developed in each country and how that influences activities • Explore how older volunteers share skills with socially disadvantaged groups – disabled people, housebound older people, and disadvantaged older people who have become leaders of community volunteer projects through buddying systems • Share good practice in recruiting, training and supporting older people to gain skills through volunteering • Consider how innovative volunteering opportunities developed by each partner could be replicated by the other • Via the volunteers, share the learning from exchanges with other volunteers so that each organisation can create new projects for older people to learn through volunteering. • Exploit the last experience of exchange as a chance to develop a more concrete and active involvement for the volunteers, in order to focus directly on volunteer action on specific themes and targets
