    Empowering Gender Equality

The two-year interdisciplinary project will involve four secondary schools from Croatia, France, Germany and Italy and will explore the position and role of women in contemporary Europe and the level of human rights granted to them in the various countries. Students will study the cultural, historical and economic factors that have brought about the present sociopolitical situation, highlight gender stereotypes and learn how tradition, family values and education can shape a woman's self-image and self esteem. They will focus on the hidden symbolism of traditional fiction, deconstruct the language and images of the media and advertising, interview representative people and learn about their life experience. They will focus on the following gender issues: women’s civil rights, their participation in policy-making, their social and political representativeness, their education, the problems of gender-based violence and trafficking, of discrimination in the political, economic and social areas, etc. The students will carry out surveys and researches, then share, compare and comment their findings on a collaborative magazine and blog. The activities will enable them to identify the gaps in the existing legislations, and encourage them to offer suggestions and alternatives to support social justice and social dialogue. They will also take specific and concrete actions: disseminate the results of their research through public presentations, create a DVD, arrange exhibitions both at school and in the local community, write reports for the local media. Their ideas will be gathered and in March 2013 students from all schools involved will present them to the Parliamentary Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) in Strasbourg.
