"Spotlights For Tolerance (S4T)" was about devising, rehearsing, performing and documenting theatrical scenes on the importance of being tolerant and respectful towards other people and their culture. Tolerance can help to get rid of prejudices and lead to a true appreciation of diversity. In the course of the project, young people from five countries and their teachers devised improvisations or wrote scenes that contributed to the performance of a joint play; they rehearsed their scenes together and performed their work on the partner schools' stages in front of audiences of pupils, teachers and parents. The play was designed in such a way that some passages of conversation were in the partner countries' languages in order to convey the sound of these other languages (German, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Turkish) in addition to English, which was the main project language (boosting the pupils' command and fluency of this eminently important European language). The process of dealing with the topic was documented at a weblog as well as in a brochure, which not only describes the teams' schools and cities, but also contains a chapter on prejudice and how to deal with aggression at school. The public weblog contains travel reports about the five meetings in diary form. The final meeting, where the complete play was be presented to the public (the previous meetings' scenes via summary and photographs, the last scenes on stage), was filmed and a DVD was be produced for use in the partner schools, but also for distribution on demand or via the internet, respectively. Throughout the project, all participating pupils, teachers and their schools not only dealt with tolerance as their drama topic, but everyone experienced first-hand what it means to be tolerant, how prejudices turn out to be wrong - by planning and discussing, admiring cultural treasures - and by playing together.
