Mitigating climate change, food shortage and social exclusion by adopting healthy and sustainable lifestyles

INTRODUCTION Because they strengthen social bonds and help cultural exchanges (or even consolidate contracts), collective meals enrich societies. Notwithstanding great diversity, European and worldwide food cultures’ common denominators are sufficient to make up nutritious meals that the whole human family can share. “Eating Together” lays the foundations of an inclusion educational programme. I. FOOD ACCESS Some dietary issues restrict food access for various communities in Europe - Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, vegetarian, vegan and more. The partners have produced a positive list of ingredients that are acceptable to the widest possible range of dietary cultures. It can be used in the preparation of nutritious and ethical meals by anyone from neighbours and friends to major institutional caterers seeking to comply with best practice on equality and freedom of conscience. II. HEALTH PROTECTION “Eating Together” meals are plant based. The partners therefore collected and translated publications from the Ministries of Health of thirty countries. Some are detailed (Canada, New-Zealand, Sweden, UK, USA, etc.), others not (Belgium, France, Germany, Romania, etc.). “Eating Together” therefore summarises best practice in national guidelines for vegan diets. This document is intended for national health authorities, people who choose to live on a vegan diet, health professionals (nutrition specialists doctors, dietitians), as well as professional caterers and food aid programs. It also helps in balancing “Eating Together” meals. III. ENVIRONMENT Some institutions are begining to focus on environmental impacts of food. The fifth revision of the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations states: "with a general vegan diet it is possible to half the climate impact from what we eat". IV.
