    Silver Thread

The two-year Senior Volunteering project Silver Thread has allowed to AUSER Marche (Italy) and Third Age Foundation (Ireland) volunteers to share their experiences on a service that both offer to frail elderly people or people in need. The Helpline was launched in Ireland as a result of the Italian Filo d’Argento positive experience, which began twenty-three years ago. Helpline however focuses more on listening activity. Mutual learning of volunteers occurred, during the project, on the service performances, on its implications for them, on the training they received, the difficulties and challenges they encountered, the benefits obtained by people in need, and addressed by the Silver Thread or Helpline services, and by the volunteers themselves. The project also provided volunteers the opportunity to compare the approaches of the two Organizations in delivering the service, to share ideas and solicitations of new effective ways to improve the listening service. Were included in the project, four weeks stays of six AUSER volunteers in Ireland, and six Third Age volunteers in Italy, in order to contribute to local projects, to participate in activities, cultural events, discussions and interactions with all local volunteers, and some Filo d’Argento National managers in Rome. These two mobility experiences, which took place in 2011, European Year of Volunteering, were video recorded, volunteers also took care of a large photographic reportage. During the final part of the project, all AUSER Associations, in Le Marche provinces, have hosted presentations by the volunteers on mobility on their experiences. Showing the video montages was very helpful to the aim of transferring the experiences to the fullest extent. The project Silver Thread has being helpful toward the AUSER Marche decision of increasing the sharing of volunteers experiences.
