    Setting a Seed for Change

Our partnership worked together on a pupil-led project entitled "Setting a Seed for Change" in which pupils planned and implemented a range of practical and meaningful activities designed to promote a raised awareness of the effects of excessive daily consumption. They promoted the need for changed attitudes and collective responsibility to ensure healthier, less wasteful and sustainable future communities for all, thereby contributing to necessary global climate change. Pupils worked in collaboration across Europe to produce powerful outcomes for practical application. They explored and shared different methods of measuring, assessing and comparing consumption of energy and paper and the waste of food and water in school and at home. They researched, discussed and promoted agreed ways to reduce this consumption and waste by finding creative and practical ways to use less energy, water and paper, to re-use and/or recycle waste materials, including paper and food. As evidence of their work, each school designed a useful product or artefact for their establishment made from recycled materials. Locally-sourced and seasonal items were used to create healthy meals and pupils shared and participated in a European Day of sport as they explored the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Results and recommendations have been made available across Europe via a dedicated project website and multilingual leaflets of 'Tips and Tricks' to save energy, gas and water. All schools contributed to a DVD Project Diary to share pupil learning, experience and best practice towards achieving small steps of change.
