Intercultural Drawing for European Adult Learning

IDEAL – Intercultural Drawing for European Adult Learning – is a seven-fold partnership of differing organisations aiming to establish and disseminate creative methods of facilitating drawing for adult learners as a democratic form of inter-cultural dialogue. IDEAL will transfer approaches that encourage cultural expression and develop social competences and inter-personal skills. This is based on the rationale, proven in the UK by The Campaign for Drawing, that drawing forms a: 1. Visual capability, thus transcending verbal barriers and extending cross-cultural collaboration 2. Cultural expression that adults can practice, explore, celebrate, and share with others 3. Entrepreneurial link between ideas and action, encouraging individual initiative and risk taking 4. Creative way of learning-to-learn, enabling adults to understand and extend their capabilities 5. Social activity, developing self-confidence as a spring-board to improved personal competence. Seven partnership visits and interim activities in each country will enable learners (visual arts practitioners training as drawing facilitators) to collaborate in drawing workshops that focus on cultural themes - ultimately benefiting over a thousand adult learners. IDEAL will disseminate its results as a methodological toolkit, published concurrent with the project through partner organisation websites, thus making its methods available Europe-wide as an innovative pedagogical approach to adult learning.

The key output of the IDEAL Grundtvig Partnership project, this is a 'tool'kit' for use by organisers of adult learning workshops who aim to use drawing ( or 'making marks with meaning' ) as a vehicle for enabling adults to acquire a taste for learning. It builds on the well-established Big Draw initiative of the UK Campaign for Drawing, and aims to make the methodology explored through the IDEAL partnership available Europe-wide.
