Achieving a Sustainable Lifestyle through Sport and Environmental Awareness

This project aimed to educate our students to become healthy, active citizens who realize the value of sustainable living. Students from each partner country set up a Green Schools (Eco-Schools) committee. They set out to undertake the seven steps required to achieve an FEEE flag for their schools. This work was supported and overseen by the national agency in each country (An Taisce, in Ireland). The focus of this aspect of the project was waste management. Students learned to reduce, re-use and re-cycle and encouraged others to be environmentally friendly also. They not only influenced their own school communities but became actively involved in their local areas as Green Schools requires a day of action in the community annually. Gaelcholáiste na Mara successfully achieved this aim as the school was awarded a Green Flag by An Taisce in February 2009. Toros College and Zespół Szkół w Ślemieniu are both well on the way to achieving Green Flags. A very successful partner meeting was held in Antalya, Turkey in February 2009. Irish students stayed with host Turkish families, attended classes and participated in games in Tores College. Teachers visited the school, participated in sharing and planning meetings and discussed all aspects of the project with the Polish and Turkish partners. All partners planted trees in a Comenius forest to mark our co-operation and partnership. We all travelled together to visit many sites of historic and cultural importance. The Turkish school set up a web-site www.livelongerproject.com and all partners were invited to contribute ongoing updates on the progress of the project. True friendships were formed and a great insight into the Turkish way of life. The second Comenius Partner meeting was held in Zespół Szkół w Ślemieniu, Poland in October 2009. The Irish and Turkish students played traditional games with their Polish counterparts. A presentation of the environmental work carried out in the school since the commencement of th

The Turkish school has set up a web-site www.livelongerproject.com and all partners were then invited to contribute ongoing updates on the progress of the project. The web-site was presented to all partners during the first project meeting in Antalya, Turkey on the 13th February 2009. It includes project details, activities undertaken by three partner countries and a photo gallery from partner meetings.
